Our Vision

I am the daughter of the soil of Velim.

I have often seen newspapers being collected at the homes of my relatives. Reading newspapers is a good habit of the people in Velim. But the truth is that after a few days, that newspaper is a wastepaper. I thought that it would be good to repurpose that waste newspaper and convert it into an eco-friendly pencil. It would also give us an alternative to the usage of plastic pens. So through the ‘Velim’ eco-friendly pencils, we repurpose waste newspapers and also give people a writing instrument with an eco-friendly touch.

The name Velim for my product is my tribute to the people from Velim. I want to create a global product and like my parents I want to put Velim, Goa and India on a global map.

People ask me why only newspapers. At this point of time we are focusing only on newspapers. Being a daughter of parents who come from the media business, I understand the usage of paper and the wastage that happens after the paper for a day is read. I have visited newspaper printing presses not only in Goa but Mumbai and Delhi. I understand the nuances of newspapers and its contribution to paper waste. In India only 20 percent of waste paper is collected and the rest goes for landfill. Out of 100 kilos paper used, only 30 percent comes back for recycling. Therefore, collectively we decided to do our bit to make a difference and that led us to start with newspapers first and then we plan expand our products to include other form of plain papers. We are talks with our associate partners in Coimbatore to explore if we can provide with our pencils, sharpeners that have been made out of recycled PET bottles. But that is still at a research stage.
